Studies show that GLP-1's may improve the mental wellbeing of patients with diabetes and/or obesity. Patients using a GLP-1 might see improvements in the quality of life both physically and mentally. It is suspected that GLP-1's may have an impact on patients with Alzheimer's disease and bipolar disorder – due to the neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects. Those with Alzheimer's may see improvement with learning and memory dysfunctions, whereas, the specific mechanisms of improvement in bipolar disorder are not yet understood. Further research is required in both areas. Additionally, GLP-1's have shown antidepressant and anxiolytic properties in animals. In humans, there is preliminary evidence of benefits for patients with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, however, the definitive role or mechanism of action has not yet been firmly established.
